In ongoing efforts to control population increase in the Islands, Zanzibar Ministry of Finance and Planning, Khalid Salum Mohammed says journalists have a role to play in promoting family planning in the country.

Thanks to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for support. Ms. Salama Ramadhan Makame – Commissioner for Planning Commission Department of Human Resource, Planning and Development said this here yesterday during a one-day training on family planning for some journalists.

“Our Islands’ population is increasing and this is putting a lot of pressure on resources such as housing, environment, food and water supply, schools and health facilities. For these problems to be overcome there is a need for us with the support of the media, to accept that family planning is the best way to control population,” she said

“It is important for journalists to have enough knowledge about family planning and population issues so that you can enlighten people through broadcast, print and social media. We want people to accept family planning and apply for our smooth development,”
she said added.

Facilitators of the training, which was among activities to mark 2018 World Population Day, said well-informed journalists and media management will do a better job in educating the mass and promote family planning.
